Description & Building Alterations

Designed by Schneider & Herter in 1898, 621-627 East 9th Street were four continuous, identical Old-Law tenement buildings.  6-stories tall and each 4-bays wide, the facades are a blend of Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne.  Without the cornice it is difficult to decipher, but elements of both styles are present.  The arched window openings on the third floor and play of texture created by laying the bricks in a decorative pattern are reminiscent of the Romanesque style.  The terra-cotta work, while being understated, is indicative of the Queen Anne aesthetic.

The ground floor shops were infilled at some point, further convolution the style distinction.
