620 East 6th Street; 620-622 East 6th Street | Block : 387 | Lot #119
Description & Building Alterations
This six-story New Law Tenement building was constructed in 1907 by architect Samuel Sass.
The brick building has stone stringcourses and ornamentation around the windows. This ornamentation varies but is expressed in a classical, flamboyant vocabulary including foliated scrolled keystones. The top story windows are arched with radiating voussoirs. A cornice that is probably original adorns the top of the building. On the west side of the building, the remnants of an old advertisement painted on the building can be seen. Below the sign, a portion of the building is covered in stucco in the shape of a peak. This may be the outline of a neighboring building prior to the construction of the school. Historic maps confirm the height of the previous building at 618 East 6th Street was two and a half stories. A Fire Record in the New York Times indicates that there was a fire at this address on the morning of June 5, 1939, although the damage was not severe. The building today continues to be used for its original purpose as an apartment building with 22 residential units.
