536 East 14th Street | Block : 407 | Lot #26
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story pre-law tenement was constructed in 1866, but the owner listed on the tax assessment record is illegible that year. In 1870, both Lot 25 and Lot 26 were owned by Anthony Shaffer. The building’s segmental cast-iron lintels are representative of a vernacular Italianate style. The building is four bays wide and, as was typical of pre-law tenements, does not have any air-shafts for light and ventilation. It was built concurrently with the neighboring building on Lot 25 and is possibly representative of the building that once stood on Lot 23. The first floor storefronts do not appear to have any original detailing. Although the cornice is missing, it likely resembled the one on the neighboring Lot 25.
