535 East 12th Street | Block : 406 | Lot #47
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story pre-law tenement was built in 1857, according tax records. The lot contained a house in 1856 valued at $2,000, likely the wooden house seen in the 1853 map. In 1857, the lot rose to $5,000 in value due to the construction of a brick house in the original house’s place, as depicted in the 1862 map. The footprint of the 1862 house matches the one currently sitting on the lot. Unfortunately, little of the original ornamentation remains as the ground floor has been changed, the lintels have been replaced or shaved, and the windows have been filled in with concrete masonry blocks. Smaller windows have also been added on the left-hand side. The cornice remains but may be missing some original features.
