526 East 5th Street | Block : 400 | Lot #19
Description & Building Alterations
Based on maps and tax records, No. 526 appears to have been built as a single-family row house in 1846. This was the westernmost row house of nine on this block, presumably all similar. Today, only this one survives intact. Although much of the original detail has been lost, the door surround, which survived in part until recently, and the simple dentilled cornice suggest it was designed in the Greek Revival style. The window and facade proportions and the flat roof, however, suggest the Gothic Revival style.
By 1903, this three-story plus raised basement building was being used to house four families, one per floor. It is unclear when the building would have been converted into a multiple-family dwelling.
