523 East 6th Street | Block : 402 | Lot #54
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story building, like many on this block, was likely built in 1860 as this area experienced a period of rapid development. The building likely had the same design as the building at 525 East 6th Street, but it has since been altered. It still retains the matching Italianate cornice, but has had its lintels removed and replaced with simple rectangular pieces. The ground floor is also altered. The blue colonnettes may be details retained from an earlier storefront, but the doors, windows and wall surfaces are more contemporary features.
Block : 402 / Lot : 054 / Building Date : 1860 / Original Owner : William B. Astor / Original Use : Residential / Original Architect : Unknown
