Description & Building Alterations

This five story Italianate style pre-law tenement would have been built around the same time as its neighbor at no. 517 East 12th Street, when both lots’ values rose significantly. Lot 57 shifted from $3,000 to $10,000 between 1868 and 1869. It is likely, also, that both were designed by the same architect. Unlike its neighbor, 515 East 12th Street retains its cornice and some of its projecting segmental lintels. Some additional openings have been cut in the wall to house air-conditioning units.
