Description & Building Alterations

Originally three-story Greek Revival-style row houses stood on this lot, dating back from the 1830s.

In 1903-04 the Third Street Music School Settlement altered Nos. 53 and 55 East 3rd Street with a design by architect Grosvenor Atterbury. In 1909, No. 51 was integrated into the complex of the Settlement and No. 55 was raised to four stories. Later the school moved to 233-239 East 11th Street and are still there today. In 1974, the property was sold to the Catholic Worker Movement; today it remains as Maryhouse, one of the movement’s 200 community houses.

The current complex features a Colonial Revival entrance, stone lintels and a modillioned cornice.
