Description & Building Alterations

One building constructed in 1840 and owned by Peter Stuyvesant originally sat on lots 7, 8, 9, and 10 of this block. It became six separated buildings between 1853 and 1862, three of which remain at 40½, 42, and 42½.

No. 42 St. Mark’s Place is a five-story brick tenement. Its facade features a bracketed cornice with paneled frieze and a two-story addition with patterned brickwork at the front which serves as a balcony for the third story. The historic molded window lintels have been simplified.
