Description & Building Alterations

This five-story tenement building was built as part of a corner lot development that included 163, 165, 167 and 169 Avenue C. The lintels have been covered with a type of cement coating,either obscuring or replacing the original design. The building is topped with a Neo-Grec style cornice, which is still intact.

What is the Building Blocks Project

The site explores the area generally considered today as the East Village: from a northern border of 14th Street to a southern border of Houston Street, Avenue D in the east to 4th Avenue/the Bowery to the west.
