39 East 7th Street | Block : 463 | Lot #38
Description & Building Alterations
A building was erected on this lot in 1833 for Louis Wilcox. It was alterated in 1873 by William Jose, and in 1904 and the original 3 1/2-story sturcture was enlarged into four full stories. The Flemish bond brickwork at the lower floors of this building aligns with the brick of No. 37, as do the basements and sills. The patched brickwork at the parlor level of No. 39 suggests that the stoop was removed and the parlor-level door was replaced by a window. The uppermost story does not use Flemish bond. This house was renovated and tenementized in 1873 by tenement architect William Jose, but was likely not heightened until 1904, when a rear addition permit was filed by architects Kurtzer & Rentz.
Hon. Elijah Paine, a Justice of the Superior Court, lived here beginning in 1835.
