38 East 3rd Street | Block : 458 | Lot #26
Description & Building Alterations
This is one of five surviving transitional Greek Revival row houses built together in 1835-36 by hardware merchants Hubbard & Casey. It recalls the days when this portion of Second Avenue was an elite residential thoroughfare.
All have Flemish Bond brickwork, which is evidence of their age. No. 38 retains its original stoop handrail, brownstone entrance enframement, recessed wood door frame and brownstone lintels. Queen Anne elements, such as the embellished entrance enframement and window lintels, were likely added in the late 19th century. The entrance door and and cornice are historic.
