37 East 7th Street | Block : 463 | Lot #39
Description & Building Alterations
This row house was built in 1833 as part of the row house development occurring at that time on this block. The building has a relatively modest design with with simple molding above the final level and above and below each window. The most elaborate molding on the building’s facade is the archway above the main entrance. It retains its heavy doorway surround, sills and lintels, cornice, and Flemish-bond brickwork. It is a modest reflection of developer Thomas Davis’ grander houses, such as 20 St. Mark’s Place, built around the same time.
In 1903, an application with an unclear resolution was submitted to install a galvanized iron cornice on the front of the building, and to use the basement, first, and second stories as offices. In 1916, the walls of the attic were built up and the rooms on the third story were rearranged so as to increase the height of the third story.
