340 East 13th Street | Block : 454 | Lot #29
Description & Building Alterations
This old-law tenement building was completed in 1889 by architect Rentz & Lange for owner Justus H. Zimmerman, along with the adjacent buildings at 342 and 338 East 13th Street. The building originally housed 20 families. In 1939 the hallways were made fire retardant, and water closets and baths were added for each family. At that time the first through fifth floors contained four apartments each, the cellar held two apartments plus storage space, and the building was owned by Fred W. Roloff. It is presently five stories in height, four bays wide at the upper stories, and five bays wide at the first floor. The facade is symmetrically arranged, the upper stories are clad in brick with stone ornament, and the first floor and exposed basement level are clad in stone. The centered entry is arched, flanked by columns on plinths, and capped by modillions. There are round arch windows at the fourth floor. Stone ornament in the upper stories include band courses, lintels, and sills. The cornice, featuring modillions and brackets, is intact and has a raised center section.
