Description & Building Alterations

This old-law tenement building was completed in 1889 by architect Rentz & Lange for owner Justus H. Zimmerman, along with the adjacent buildings at 340 and 338 East 13th Street. The building originally housed 20 families. In 1938, new water closets were added along with an interior window to increase ventilation. The water closets also necessitated new doors, allowing for greater access from each apartment. The present building is five stories in height, four bays wide at the upper stories, and five bays wide at the first floor. The facade is symmetrically arranged and the upper stories are clad in brick with stone ornament. The first floor and exposed basement level are clad in stone. The centered entry is arched and flanked by columns on plinths and capped by modillions. There are round arch windows at the fourth floor. Stone ornament in the upper stories include band courses, lintels and sills. The cornice has been removed.
