338 East 14th Street | Block : 455 | Lot #27
Description & Building Alterations
This tenement building was constructed between 1864 and 1867, though it has been heavily modified since that time. The lot was owned by C.A. Catlin in 1864, when it was valued at $3,000, and was sold to William Diel by 1867, at which point it was valued at $9,000. The 1868 tax record indicated the presence of a four-story house with a basement on this lot. In 1912 new window openings were cut in the rear of the building and the interior was altered to accommodate ten families. At that time the owner was still William Diel and the supervising architect was Henry Klein. In 1927 the front part of the basement was removed, the front three rooms on each side of the building were converted into stores, and the entry stairs were removed from the sidewalk and placed inside. In 1930 and 1969 the building was altered internally to change the apartment configurations. According to tax photos, the building’s façade has been replaced by new brickwork and does not retain any original details. Currently it is five stories in height and two bays wide, clad in brown and white brick. The parapet features brown brick diamonds
