Description & Building Alterations

No. 327 Bowery was constructed in 1835 as a two-and-a-half-story house, though it is unrecognizable as such today. When originally built, the house had a peaked roof, typical of homes from that time. The house was raised to the highest point of its peak in 1889, thereby flattening the roof.

In 1893, the building was used as cabinet makers shop. In 1899, the front wall of the building was removed up to the second floor lintels; an iron girder was installed and supported by granite columns at each end. Because the original 1834 building was never torn down (just built around), portions of this building are still nearly two centuries old.
