311 East 12th Street | Block : 454 | Lot #65
Description & Building Alterations
According to tax records, this three-story Greek Revival row house was constructed in 1853. The vacant lot was originally owned by City Bank of New Haven & Edmond Strong and valued at $1,500. After construction, the house was valued at $4,500. In 1901, the building was owned by the Children’s Aid Society and used as the lodging for their caretaker. During this time an opening was cut into the building at 309 East 12th Street and internal alterations to bathrooms took place under architect Joseph H. Nevins. 311 East 12th Street is three stories in height with an exposed basement level. It is two bays wide and clad in brick with a rusticated stone base. It retains its bracketed cornice – alluding to the Italianate style – a marble front stoop, and pilasters with Doric capitals. The entry surround has square columns supporting an entablature with triglyphs and metopes at the frieze.
