  • Building Date : 1870
  • Original Use : Residential
  • Original Owner : Hamilton Fish/Joseph Hewlett

Description & Building Alterations

This four-story with basement building was originally erected as a house in 1870, according to historic tax records. Its street number was formerly No. 215. It is uncertain who the owner was at the time of the build, since the tax records list it as Hamilton Fish and the Real Estate Record and Builders’ Guide lists it as Joseph Hewlett.

The present facade features a bracketed cornice with a paneled frieze, molded window lintels, simple rectangular sills, and a round-arched entryway on a stoop, with flanking pilasters foliated at the top supporting a segmental arch. From 1909 to 1929 the building was owned and occupied by the Christodora House. One of the earliest settlement houses in New York City, the Christodora House was founded in 1897 by Sara Carson and Christine MacColl and served the surrounding immigrant community.
