307 East 10th Street | Block : 404 | Lot #52
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story, brick building was originally constructed in 1845, as a four-story tall rowhouse. It was designed by Joseph Trench for original owner Benjamin F. Camp.
Row houses built at this time and designed by Joseph Trench were often in transition of Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The window lintels and sills on this building, as well as the cornice, are replacements and are Queen Anne in style. This was also a common occurrence in the late 19th century, when owners were renovating their row houses and tenements.
This building was owned by the Lilienthal family, German born immigrants, between the late 1850s and 1870. In Europe, Max Lilienthal was a prominent political figure and when he came to the United States, he became a religion teacher. As he continued with his progressive and controversial views, he resigned from his teaching position and established his own educational institute. Today, Lilienthal is known for his role as an educator in the Reform Judaism movement.
