A five-story tenement was demolished in 1943 on this lot, which is now a community garden known as All People’s Garden. The original five story brick tenement was built in 1874, owned by Peter Zapp and designed by Julliu Boekell. This was a vacant lot by the 1980s according to tax photos from the period.

What is the Building Blocks Project

The site explores the area generally considered today as the East Village: from a northern border of 14th Street to a southern border of Houston Street, Avenue D in the east to 4th Avenue/the Bowery to the west.
