This six story tenement was constructed in 1902 for $40,000 by developers Newman & Spielberger employing the services of architects Sass & Smallheiser. The building replaces two rowhouses that were part of what was once known as “Political Row” a series of houses on this block of East 7^th Street that were homes to a number of New York politicians, judges and related clubs. Many of these homes were replaced by tenements in the early 1900’s.

What is the Building Blocks Project

The site explores the area generally considered today as the East Village: from a northern border of 14th Street to a southern border of Houston Street, Avenue D in the east to 4th Avenue/the Bowery to the west.
