Description & Building Alterations

No. 237 East 2nd Street is a five-story brick pre-law tenement built in 1864 for John J. Schull, based on tax assessment records. The raised basement, with apartment windows on each side of the stoop, may have originally been used for retail space.

Until 1995, the building contained 21 apartments, but several were merged in that year and there are now 16. The building is faced in brick and retains what appears to be original detailing in the cornice and window trimmings. There is a rear entrance and a small yard on the back of the lot that faces Houston Street.
