235 East 4th Street | Block : 400 | Lot #39
Description & Building Alterations
Built in 1903, this new law tenement on the northwest corner of Avenue B and East 4th Street originally housed 30 families over ground-floor shops. The six-story building features Renaissance Revival details such as full window enframements, splayed and segmental arched lintels, and garland swags in the pressed-metal cornice. The pilasters surrounding several windows are in the Corinthian order, the highest of the classical Greek orders.
The facade has been painted, but originally the dark red brick would have been in higher contrast to the white brick of the recessed beltcourses, giving the facade a more striking striped appearance. Additionally, a portion of East 4th Street facade is missing its cornice.
