Description & Building Alterations

No. 230 East 2nd Street was built in 1872 along with the buildings on neighboring lots as a pre-law tenement. Originally housing over ten families and two basement-level wood storefronts, it is identical to its neighbor at no. 232, including its later alterations. In 1899, plate glass storefronts were installed.

The upper floor apartments were accessed by a stoop, which was likely removed in 1945 when the two stores were converted to apartments. It is presumed that the brick infill and door surround at the ground floor, which still exists, occurred at this time. The single pane of glass above the current ground floor entrance is where the original doorway to the upper apartments was located. The large arched lintel over this glass pane also provides a clue as to where the former door existed.
