Description & Building Alterations

Along with its neighbors, the building at 232 East 2nd Street was constructed in 1872 and is a pre-law tenement building. There were originally two wood storefronts and two apartments on the basement level and four apartments on each upper floor. In 1899, plate glass storefronts were installed.

The upper floor apartments were accessed by a stoop, which was likely removed in 1945 when the two stores were converted to apartments. It is presumed that the brick infill and door surround at the ground floor, which still exists, occurred at this time. The large pane of glass above the current ground floor entrance is where the original doorway to the upper apartments was located. The large arched lintel over this glass pane also provides a clue as to where the former door existed.
