228 East 6th Street | Block : 461 | Lot #22
Description & Building Alterations
This building was combined with the five-story tenement next to it sometime following its original construction date in 1890. The buildings were originally built by and for Jobst Hoffmann and housed 20 families.
This was the former site of the First Methodist Congregational Colored Church, the destination for the church’s organist, Elizabeth Jennings who sparked a massive protest and law suit when she was forcibly removed from a NYC streetcar in 1854. For further information, see the Village Preservation blog post link.
