Description & Building Alterations

No. 227 East 2^nd Street was built together with its neighbor 225 East 2^nd Street in 1863 for owner John Ritter (see No. 225 East 2nd Street for tax records).

The building was constructed as a tenement with a storefront on the first floor, which was later converted to an apartment. Early use of the lot as a church site is evidenced by historic maps and tax records. According to a map from 1853, a Methodist Church existed on lots 17 and 18, and in 1862 an “African Church” owned this particular lot.
