227 East 12th Street | Block : 468 | Lot #48
Description & Building Alterations
Built as one of a series of row houses on this street, 227 East 12th Street was constructed in 1852. While it was likely a designed in transitional style between Greek Revival and Italianate, all that remains of the original details is the cornice. The brownstone lintels have been shaved down and the raised-stoop entrance and projecting entryway have also been removed.
From 1904 through at least the late 1950s, the five story building functioned as a boarding house. In 1904, it had 15 furnished rooms above the first floor.
