Description & Building Alterations

No. 226 East 3rd Street was built in 1876 and designed by William Jose. Two buildings stand on the lot, one behind the other. The front building is a five-story tenement with stores on the ground floor. Before the ground floor was converted to stores in 1903, it was used as a stable. The rear building, only two stories tall, was used for light manufacturing purposes at that time.

The building façade retains a great deal of historic detail, which includes the cornice and window lintels and sills. A significant change to the ground floor occurred in 1903 when the entrance to the building was moved from the side of the façade to the center.
