Description & Building Alterations

Lot 31 is comprised of one, five story building on the corner of E. 7th Street and Avenue C. Three bays wide on its front façade, and nine bays on the 7th Street facade, the building is faced in light painted brick and each window is trimmed with simple sills and arched crowns  The parapet is stepped.

It appears on the 1853 map and by the time of the 1868 map, it is five stories.  Tax records indicate a two story increase in 1866 with a new assessed value of $6,000.  The building was extended at the rear in 1904, adding two additional rooms to each story. A dentist’s office on the second floor was converted to an apartment in the late 1920’s and by 1944 there were a total of nine apartments in the building. Today a grocery store occupies the entire ground floor.
