Description & Building Alterations
These buildings were constructed in 1872 as two pre-law tenements and later combined into one.
The 1980s tax photo, which was taken between 1983 and 1988, shows that the two buildings still had separate entrances and cornices at that time. The unification of the two buildings likely occurred shortly after that photo was taken. Alterations at this time or some time later include the creation of the central lobby entrance at the basement level (as opposed to two separate entrances) and a new scored stucco finish over the brick at the two bottom floors. The cornices were replaced by attic windows, and a peaked parapet with a diamond-shape cutout capped the top of the building…
The tax photo reveals that the stoops of both buildings had already been removed in favor of ground floor entrances that were marked by brick door surrounds. These alterations likely dated to 1945, as they were similar to the changes made to neighboring buildings (nos. 230 and 232) in that year. Storefronts originally occupied the ground levels of each building, but a C of O from 1969 indicates that, by that point, they had been replaced by apartments. Again, it is presumed that this conversion occurred in 1945, as with nos. 230 and 232.
