Description & Building Alterations

Built as one of four in a row of speculative buildings, 218 East 14th Street was constructed in 1857 for Hamilton Fish or James B. Thompson. Fish owned the lots while they were vacant, but Thompson was the first owner listed once the buildings were completed. Unlike the other two buildings, no. 222 and 224 East 14th Street are only 2-bays wide as opposed to 3-bays. The now 5-story tall brownstone was designed in the Italianate style and still retains the original projecting lintels and sills, as well as a pressed-metal cornice. However, it has lost its raised-stoop entrance.
