Description & Building Alterations

No. 223 East 2nd Street was built in 1904 by architects Sass & Smallheiser as a bathhouse with apartments on upper floors.

The building is faced in brick with limestone details and was originally five stories with a raised basement. A sixth story was added after its construction, but before the early 1940s. There was originally a stoop leading to a doorway above the present-day entrance, but it was removed after the c. 1940 tax photo was taken. The change may have been made when the building was converted to manufacturing and offices in 1949.
