223 East 11th Street | Block : 467 | Lot #50
Description & Building Alterations
This was originally two separate buildings that were constructed in 1854, identical to No. 219 though perhaps designed by a different architect. The two buildings were originally owned by Mrs. Catherine Lebring and Peter McPherson and each functioned as a single-family home. Mr. McPherson was a ship carpenter.
In 1903, no. 223 East 11th Street was operating as housing for one family who rented out several furnished rooms. It is possible that around this time the two buildings were joined together. In 1967, no. 233 was converted into an apartment building by architects Wechsler & Schimenti, a firm that designed the luxury apartment building at 200 Central Park South in 1964. A new base was added, and the previously arched windows at this floor were converted to square windows with black shutters set against a white background. The doorway with a Colonial-style pediment is misaligned with the window above it, and the brownstone stoop has been replaced by a metal stoop with a double stair. The building retains its multi-paned sash.
