Description & Building Alterations

Built as one of four in a row of speculative buildings, 218 East 14th Street was built in 1857 and was developed for Hamilton Fish or James B. Thompson. Fish owned the lots while they were vacant, but Thompson was the first owner listed once the buildings were completed. no. 222 and 224 East 14th Street vary from the other two buildings in that they are only 2-bays wide as opposed to 3-bays. The now 5-story tall brownstone was designed in the Italianate style and still retains the original projecting lintels and sills, a pressed-metal cornice, but has lost its raised-stoop entrance. The upper four floors of the building were vacated in 1941 and remained empty possibly until the late 1980s.
