222 East 10th Street | Block : 451 | Lot #22
Description & Building Alterations
This three-bay wide, four-story with basement building was originally erected in 1844-45 as a three-and-a-half story house. It was raised to four stories in 1884. The entrance has been moved to the basement and most historical details have been removed. During an alteration by architect Charles M. Straub in 1919, the facade was covered in a Portland cement mixture and the Art Deco features such as the scalloped window enframements at the ground story were added.
In the early 1950s, filmmaker and photographer Stanley Kubrick lived here with his wife Ruth Sobotka.
