220 East 14th Street | Block : 469 | Lot #18
Description & Building Alterations
Built as one of four in a row of speculative buildings, 218 East 14th Street was built in 1857 and was developed for Hamilton Fish or James B. Thompson. Fish owned the lots while they were vacant, but Thompson was the first owner listed once the buildings were completed. The now 5-story tall brownstone was designed in the Italianate style and would have once had projecting lintels and sills, and a raised-stoop entrance. It still retains a portion of its original cornice.
In the 1950s the building’s upper floors were used as artists’ studios and apartments.
