219 East 11th Street | Block : 467 | Lot #52
Description & Building Alterations
This four story building was constructed in 1853-54 for William Beard. Mr. Beard passed away under odd circumstances in 1871, when his body was found in the North River. He left behind a considerable estate for his four adult children. Although it is wider than the houses at nos. 215 and 217, this building also has an arched entryway, double doors, a covered brownstone base, and a brick facade. The windows have segmental-arched lintels with brackets. The building retains its multi-paned sash, Italianate stair railings, raised-stoop, and metal cornice. On the interior, the building was converted into a single-room occupancy, with at least 18 rooms for rent in the early to mid-1900s. It was converted into duplex apartments in 1966.
