Description & Building Alterations

Nos. 215-219 E. 2nd Street have been consolidated to form present lot 12. What once were three separate buildings is now a single apartment complex, united visually by a ground floor exterior of yellow brick and storefront windows. The three buildings share a common entrance and are connected on the interior. Although the ground floor portion of the façade has been resurfaced, clues to the original storefronts and door openings are evidenced by surviving iron posts.

No. 215 was built in 1865-66 either as an alteration of the then three story structure on the site or as a new building. This five-story tenement with ground floor retail has been stripped of original ornamentation, which once included a decorative cornice and arched window hoods.

Its neighbor at 217 E. 2nd Street was erected in 1882 by architect J.W. Klemt. The upper stories retain original detail in the form of brick facing, an iron cornice and modest brownstone lintels and sills.

219 East 2nd Street was constructed in the late 1877-78 and like No, 215 it was either an alteration of the three story which had occupied the site or a new building. Window ornament survives here, however a cornice has been lost and resurfaced with stucco.
