Description & Building Alterations

This brick structure was originally built along with 210 East 10th Street, as a three-and-a-half story dwelling for one family. In 1892 it was raised to four stories and became a multiple dwelling during an alteration designed by Ernest W. Greis.

A map of East Village art galleries from 1983 (see sidebar) shows that the Garet/Kohn Gallery was at this location.

The present facade features a bracketed cornice with decorated frieze, simple molded window lintels and rectangular sills. The lintels at the fourth story have been stripped, the entrance has been moved to basement, and a faux stone cladding has been added to the basement.
