Description & Building Alterations

This building was constructed as part of a set of row houses found on the adjacent three lots. This is still evident today as illustrated in their continuous façade and party walls. According to historic tax records the structures were completed in 1850. Before construction the vacant lot was valued at $1,300 and the owner was Margaret Folson. After construction the building was valued at $3,150. Eventually the building would come to face the First Avenue elevated train line.

New toilets were added in 1913 by owner George W. Folson and architect Maximilian Zipkes. In 1928 the rear openings were enlarged, new brick piers were constructed on the façade, the storefront was replaced, and new girders and columns were installed by owner LaStella Holding Corp. and architect Charles Reissmann. In 1936, the floor plans were altered on the second, third, and fourth floors. During this time the fire escapes were removed and relocated to the rear yard under owner Sicula Operating Corp. In 1939, a one-story rear extension was added and the ceilings were fireproofed. In 1941, owner George G. Hollock altered the existing storefront to make it flush with the building line with metal trim and a porcelain base. In 1954, a new bathroom was added on the second floor, the existing water closet was removed, and the kitchen fixtures were relocated.  205 First Avenue is four stories in height, three bays wide, and clad in brick. It has a bracketed cornice and the storefront has been significantly altered.
