201 East 2nd Street; 14-16 Avenue B | Block : 397 | Lot #33
Description & Building Alterations
This incredibly detailed Renaissance Revival building built in 1899 has rich terra cotta ornamentation including beltcourses, keystones, window surrounds and panels with classical themes. The deeply projecting cornice, visible in the 1940 tax photo but now missing, followed the curve of the corner and added to the drama and elegance of this building. Designed by prolific tenement architects Kurtzer & Rohl, it accommodated 31 families and first-floor stores. Fanny Dinkelspiel, the daughter of the original owner of the building, was an early resident at the famous Ansonia building on the Upper West Side and owned this building shortly after its completion.
