189 East 3rd Street | Block : 399 | Lot #43
Description & Building Alterations
Built in 1904 to house 17 families, this new law tenement was designed by Bernstein & Bernstein and is a lovely example of Renaissance Revival style. The red brick is contrasted with the white terra cotta and the yellow brick of the sixth floor. The pediment lintels are ornately decorated with cartouches and vines, all typical of this period. The top floor is accentuated with pilasters, the capitals of which are incorporated into the metal cornice. This building and its neighbor at No. 191 are nice examples of how the Renaissance Revival style could be used to create very different outcomes. No. 191 is a simpler, lower-contrast take on the style, whereas this building is a much bolder expression.
