184 East 3rd Street | Block : 398 | Lot #22
Description & Building Alterations
Built as two pre-law tenement buildings, 184 East 3rd Street has been extensively remodeled, leaving little evidence of its earlier structure. These two buildings were part of a row of four, including no. 188 and 190. Of these, only 188 still retains its original window lintels, entry surround, and brick facade.
This building originally held apartments over shops. It would have had a raised stoop entrance and commercial space below that. In 1936, the store in the basement was replaced with a restaurant, bar, and grill complete with a cabaret. At this time the raised stoop entrance had likely already been removed. In 1960 the ground floor and basement commercial spaces were converted to apartments and the exterior was remodeled. It was probably during this conversion that the two separate entrances were combined into one, the original brick was replaced, and the lintels were removed.
