183 East 3rd Street began as three separate buildings all built in the mid-1800s.  A photo of these buildings can be seen under More Building Photos: In the first image, the three buildings are on the far right.  The buildings were each functioning as independent tenements, but by 1915 Egerton L. Winthrop owned 185 and 183.  Winthrop and his subsequent company, Winthrop Realty, would eventually own many of the buildings on this block and surrounding blocks, though they appear not to have been the company that developed these three properties.

In 1950 the three buildings were combined into one, eliminating the store spaces in the original buildings and the original facade features.
