185 Avenue C; 183-187 Avenue C | Block : 394 | Lot #41-43
Description & Building Alterations
This 6-story, Old-Law tenement building was designed by Frederick Ebeling as two identical buildings owned by Hyman Baker and Joseph Fine. The buildings housed 27 families above ground-floor shops.
The brick-and-terra-cotta facade is done in the Renaissance Revival style. Interesting and three-dimensional brickwork, a signature style of Ebeling’s, is present in the spandrel panels, beltcourse, and window arches. The windows on the fifth floor have “grotesques,” or human faces, as their keystones.
Kindly restored around 2013, this building facade now better reflects its original design intent. While new, the metal cornice is similar to what would have been there originally.
