Description & Building Alterations

The buildings at No. 177 and No. 175 were constructed for owner E.A. Hopkins as identical tenement buildings in 1860.  The Italianate five-story buildings housed 38 families over ground-floor shops.  By 1875 (or possibly from the beginning) the building had large awnings shading the stores on the first floor and shutters on the upper windows.  While the window lintels and sills have been shaved down, the buildings still retain their cornice.  Additionally, the paint that once covered the facade, hiding any hint of detail, has been recently removed so that the contrast in color between the lintels and brick is visible again.  Now owned by a co-op, in the mid-1930s the buildings were owned by the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, but still functioned as tenements.
