Description & Building Alterations
The two buildings at 161 Avenue A and 281 East 10th Street are owned by the Boy’s Club of New York.
No. 161 Avenue A was originally erected in 1900, designed by P. H. Ohm Sturgis & Hill. It was raised from five stories to six stories between 1912 and 1916. No. 281 East 10th Street was constructed as a seven-story addition to the existing building in 1916.
The facade has been recently repaired in 2007. Most historical details have been removed, including the roof cornice, the point-arched entrance opening with surrounds on east facade, and the windows have been replaced/reconfigured. It is now also called the Harriman Clubhouse, one of the three locations of the Boy’s Club of New York.
