160 East 2nd Street | Block : 398 | Lot #58
Description & Building Alterations
This building began as three separate Greek Revival tenements built between 1841 and 1843. The buildings once had simple, slightly projecting lintels and sills. The right two buildings’ cornices were pressed metal with brackets while the smaller, left building (in blond brick) had a wooden cornice with dentil molding.
In 1909, no. 164 and no. 162, the right two buildings in the photo, were owned by Egerton L. Winthrop, who owned most of the tenements on this street. The three buildings were combined in 1948. Perhaps it was then that the lintels, sills, and cornices were all removed. The brickwork on all three facades has been heavily repaired and altered, making it difficult to determine when changes were made. Additionally, the ground-floor stores have been replaced with apartments.
